This was one of the facts provided by Tijo our guide on the walking tour today
around the old town, the new town & the Jewish Quarter.
Yesterday we had given the old town a good kick around but today some of the historical facts were provided and gave a better appreciation of what we were seeing.
The new town is based around Wenceslas Square a rectangular square of 750m
commencing from the Czech National Museum back towards the old town.
It was previously known as The Horse Market and the south east end of the square is dominated by Wenceslas mounted on a horse, Saint Wenceslas being the patron saint of Bohemia.
One of the hotels on the square, Hotel Evropa has a very colourful facade.
The Jewish Quarter is very close to our accommodation and backs on to the river.
There are numerous synagogues in the quarter and also a Jewish graveyard where the graves are stacked one on top of the other to save space and on which the Jewish Memorial in Berlin is based.
There are so many beautiful buildings in Prague that if I put a photo of everyone in the blog it would bore a reader silly, but here are a few
The tour ended down by the river and we had a good view both of the Charles Bridge and the Prague Castle which we will explore tomorrow
We have had two Czech traditional meals now and I can only describe them as plain and stodgy or an alternative description might be that they are wonderful if you enjoy a plate of meat covered with gravy and accompanied by 4 or 5 bread dumplings!
