As we neared Budapest there was a line of cars parked up on the other side of the motorway stretching for around 2kms. We hadn't seen any accident so wondered what the hold up was - it was only when we saw a TV showing the Formula 1 Grand Prix later in the afternoon that it clicked, these cars were queued to get into the circuit as the Grand Prix was in Budapest today.
The temperature has been stifling today, 37C according to the forecast, and as a consequence "they" were handing out free plastic bags of water in one of the
squares.
We wandered around the main area of Pest for the afternoon and saw some of the sights and a lot of shops - unlike other cities Budapest does not seem to close on a Sunday.
On Vaci Utca, one of the main artery streets in the inner city, we passed jewellers, perfumeries, brand name clothes shops and boutiques. Towards the end of the
Utca was the Church of St Michael dating from 1760.
Arriving at Fovam ter (Fovam Square) we then took a tram back towards the centre of Pest and this gave a view of the Danube, the Royal Palace, the famous Chain
Bridge and Gellert Hill.
Heading back towards the apartment we came across the State Opera House
and also stopped to be photographed leaning on a rather portly statue!
There is so much more to see over the next two days that we are here but first we have to survive tomorrow as the high is forecast to be 38C!
