Another Exquisite Old Town

Salzburg is another Austrian city that is eye poppingly beautiful.

It is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg.

Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) has internationally renowned baroque architecture and one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps.

It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

It straddles the Salzach with the major part of the Old Town on the south side and sitting high above the town is Festung Hohensalzburg (Hohensalzburg Fortress)

Along the banks of the river there was a craft market selling good quality products

The main shopping street in the Old Town, Getreidegasse, was teeming with tourists but nevertheless was an attractive street to wander down

At one end was the a church behind which was the Moenchsberg lift built into the side of the cliff face.

Along Getreidegasse was Mozart's birthplace (1756) which is now a museum.

Off Getreidegasse there were numerous alleyways which were eye catching

There was an amazing meteocolumn with thermometer, barometer and hygrometer.

And of course another significant Cathedral with a delightful interior.

The Cathedral dates from 774 but was rebuilt in 1628 following a fire. A bomb destroyed the dome in 1944 but following the rebuild during the post-war period it was reopened for services in 1959.

Early it may be but there was A Christmas in Salzburg shop selling various Christmas tree decorations.

The half day we have been in Salzburg has been very enjoyable and we have a full day tomorrow to continue to explore.
