Diocletian Palace

Today we spent the better part of it in and around the Diocletian Palace.

At the rear (I assume the front is from the promenade) there is a large statue of

Grgur Ninski - Gregory of Nin - which commemorates the 10th century bishop who fought to hold religious services in the Croatian language.

Visitors often rub Grgur Ninski's toe for luck.

While inside there is the main square and towering the square is the Bell Tower.

We paid our money and we started the climb and from the top there was a terrific
view over both Split and the Adriatic

I took a video from the tower and that can be viewed here

The palace was of Roman origin and around noon there was a performance in the square and that can be viewed here

I'm sorry I cut off their heads late in the show but I stopped looking through the camera and started watching it live!

Around noon a cruise liner arrived in the city and disgorged its 2000 odd

passengers into the already significant crowd.

The basement area of the palace is an extremely well preserved area built in 350AD

by the Romans. It was interesting to wander through this area and marvel how it was built in that day without the mechanical aids we are familiar with and also how it has lasted in such good condition over the many years since it was constructed.

Shopping in various market stalls and shops in the palace completed that part of the day and we then went for a swim in the extremely warm water of this part of the Adriatic.

Tomorrow we move further north to Zadar.
