Holiday Day

Today, August 15th, is a national holiday in Austria and as a consequence most shops etc. are closed.

As we were aware of this before we can over we had planned that this afternoon/ evening we would go to Schloss Schoenbrunn for a tour, dinner & concert.

As the concert will be classical music we may or may not enjoy it but nevertheless we will do it.

I will report on the afternoon in a later posting.

This morning we took the U-Bahn to Alte Donau which gave access to Donaupark an area adjacent to the Danube and which is a large expanse of greenery set with many activities for young families

The main feature of the area is Donauturm which gives a good view over greater

Vienna including St Stephens away in the distance

Nearby is UNO City (on the left) which houses the UN in Vienna as well as Donau City (the area with the highest building)

The tower was built in 1964 and the viewing deck is 170m above ground level.

The residences in the area give one the feel of upmarket suburbia though near the train station the water area had "a forest" growing beneath the surface.

It was then back on the U-Bahn to get back to our accommodation to dress for the concert!
