Our drive from Opatija to Maribor was uneventful on, in the main, a good motorway as the video we took on the A1 shows.
Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia and being adjacent to ski fields is busier in winter than it is in summer and that coupled with the fact that we arrived on a Sunday allowed us to wander the central area without worrying about crowds.
Come on a tour of Maribor with us
Maribor has the inevitable strip of water in this case Drava River crossed by Glavni Most and further along the river the Titov Most
Near Glavni Most is the Jewish Tower (1465) and Synagogue
and the Water Tower (1555)
Further along is The Old Vine, recognised as the oldest grape vine in the world
and after over 400 years it is still producing fruit.
Near The Old Vine is The Judgement Tower (1310)
Slightly away from the river is the Plague Monument commemorating the plague of 1743
The monument is in the square outside the City Hall (1515). Moving deeper into the
city one finds the Cathedral of St John The Baptist, dating from the 12th Century and with a beautiful interior.
Moving through the pedestrian only zone one reaches The City Castle (1478)
outside of which is a memorial to the WWII dead from this area and across the road
is a Franciscan Church.
The beauty of viewing all of the above is that it is was achieved on foot in an area of around 2 square kms - and you enjoy it without taking a step!
Slovenia is in the Euro zone so once again we have reverted back to the Euro which we will use for the rest of the drive until we get back to Switzerland.
We have been left with some PLN (Poland), RSD (Serbia), HUF (Hungary) and CZK (Czech Republic) totalling around 3.54 euro so those coins will remain a memento of our trip.
