Overwhelming!

We continue to be overwhelmed with the beauty of Vienna.

Today we walked through the Hofburg Palace area,

the lovely gardens of Volksgarten between Hofburg and the Parliament

and the Rathaus (City Hall) in front of which during the summer months they have free outdoor films on the very large screen.

The rear of the Hofburg was a hive of activity

However it was the interior of St Peters Church that blew the mind.

It's artistic qualities surely make it one of Vienna's most impressive places to visit.

It was Vienna's first Christian church built when Vienna was still a Roman camp. The original church was replaced with the present baroque styled building at the beginning of the 18th century.

The photos that follow tell there own story

While we were there, there was a performance by a harp ensemble, visible in the last photo, which added to the enjoyment of the visit.

Leaving the church we walked over to Stephensplatz and stumbled across The Stock im Eisen which is the midsection of a tree-trunk from the Middle Ages, a so-called nail-tree into which hundreds of nails have been pounded for good luck over centuries.

It is behind glass on a corner of the Palais Equitable and the trunk section is 2.19 m tall and is held in place by five iron bands which bear the date 1575.

The city never fails to surprise.
